Court ordered rehab is increasingly becoming common today. These are usually sentenced due to increasing drug and alcohol abuse prevalent in society. If the accused is guilty of substance abuse, the punishment by law is either a long jail-term or a court ordered rehab.

A Court ordered rehab is basically a program that helps eliminate the addiction to drug or alcohol. It is enforced by a judge over an individual to attend a rehab program. It is handed down in form of a punishment, or as a replacement for time spent in jail. When a judge feels that an individual would not willingly attend a rehab, they are forced by the law to attend these, as part of disciplinary action. If an individual revolts against the order, they are compelled to spend the same time in jail.
It is reported that around 90% of the patients in rehab centers are compelled by the court to sign up for the treatment.
Types of court ordered drug rehab
In general, there are two types of court ordered drug rehabs. The judge normally allows the victim to make a choice between the type of treatment program they would prefer to attend.
The choice is between residential treatment, popularly known as the Inpatient rehabilitation centers, or an Outpatient drug rehabilitation program.
Inpatient Rehabilitation Center Program
In this case, the individual is under drug abuse treatment at the centre. The person is required to remain within the vicinity for the entire length of the program. It can last for 30, to as long as 90 days, depending on the patient’s progress. This option is frequently chosen by the victim due to top-notch service and care provided at these centers.
Outpatient Rehabilitation Program
Under this case, the individual prefers to live in an environment they know, close to their loved ones. Therefore, these patients attend to the rehab programs, but only for a few hours in a day/week.
However, in both the cases, the judge/court is not liable to pay for the individual’s treatment program.
Court ordered rehab: Are they useful?
When an individual enters a rehab program enforced by law, they need to do certain things in order to get successful treatment.
For starters, individuals should have a positive attitude towards the program, as it is imposed for the betterment of the individual. The program offers counseling sessions, blood/urine tests, activities, therapies, and certified professional assistance from doctors to help the individual break the wrath of the addiction.
Along with the victims’ attitude and the effectiveness of rehab centers/programs, the court ordered rehab will prove to be useful for the victim.
