Crack cocaine is the most prominent drug issue in Mississippi by far. The drug is shipped in from Mexico and other US states through interstate routes to both urban and rural areas of Mississippi. Though crack cocaine is more popular than cocaine in powdered form, the powder cocaine is also used at significant rates.
Methamphetamine use is on the rise in Mississippi. Most Meth is manufactured locally in small laboratories located in rural areas of the state. Ecstasy is popular among young people in the “rave” scenes.
Heroin is not significantly present in Mississippi.

Mississippi has a very low rate of casual alcohol drinkers. Only 37% of Mississippi adults report having at least one alcoholic beverage in the past month, compared with 56% nationally. Additionally, only 10% of Mississippians reported binge drinking in the past month – significantly lower than the national rate of 24%.
The rates of high school students who drink in Mississippi are also lower than the national averages, though the disparity isn’t nearly as great. About 36% of high school students had at least one alcoholic beverage in the past month, compared with national rates around 39%.

Mississippi has a significant problem with gambling addiction. About 3.9% of residents display some form of problem gambling or gambling addiction, compared with around 2% nationally.
